A HAPPY CARE GUIDE.
A SIMPLE HOW-TO GUIDE ON CARING FOR YOUR WAX.
ARE YOU WICK 'ED?
Here at Ginko & Rye, we use both flat-braided wicks & wooden wicks. This is because they are more efficient, eco-friendly and have a greater scent throw. Our wooden wicks also create a toasty ambience and boast an audible crackle. So, everyone wins really. But, as with all things that are special, they have their own nuances to be understood.

Our unique wicks mean that our candles sometimes display different burning characteristics than some of your more well-known candles. Don't worry though - it's hardly rocket science and we've just so happened to make a handy whistle-stop tour for you to scan through.
6 EASY CANDLE RULES TO LIVE BY.
Below are six glorious rules (or suggestions, if you want to go rogue) for giving your candle the best possible start in life. We want you to get the most out of your candle. After all, we grew and birthed them into the world. And, well, we just want the best for them (and you, of course!)
1.
LIGHT THE WICK FULLY / ALL THE WAY ACROSS.
This is especially important with wooden wicks. This helps the candle to burn evenly.
2.
ALLOW THE CANDLE TO BURN UNTIL THE WAX MELTS OUT TO ALL THE EDGES OF THE JAR.
This may take from about 30 to 60 minutes. This prevents the candle from tunneling. Tunneling is when the wax is burned unequally, leaving a ring of wax around the rim of the candle. This causes wax wastage. During a burn, the flame height may vary at times and occasionally appear to self-extinguish, but, it's okay! Even if you're experiencing a "low" flame, it will continue to heat and the flame height will return. If the flame appears too large, soots, or gets too close to the jar, simply extinguish the flame, trim the wick and relight. The recommended burn time is 3-4 hours.
3.
KEEP THE CANDLE AWAY FROM DRAFTS.
Such as ceiling fans, air conditioners or breezes.
4.
NEVER MOVE OR HANDLE THE CANDLE WHILST BURNING.
This is very unsafe, and pouring or removing liquid wax from the jar will cause the wick to extinguish.
5.
KEEP THE WICK TRIMMED TO BETWEEN 1/8 AND 1/4 INCH.
If the candle begins to smoke, or if the flame height is greater than 1.5 inches, gently blow out the candle, allow the wick and the wax to cool, and trim the wick. Remove all wick trimmings before relighting.
6.
FOR YOUR SAFETY.
Please extinguish our flat-braided wicks when 1/6 inch of wax remains. Our wooden wick candles are designed to self-extinguish when 3/8 inches of wax remains. So, you might notice that you have a little puck of wax at the bottom of your jar after your candle has expired. This might seem wasteful but, your safety is our top priority. And we encourage enthusiastic humans to recycle this as a wax melt.
FOR PUCK'S SAKE.
We love a pun. Do we overdo it? Probably. But, we won't apologise for it. Anyway, below we've squished together a little how-to-guide on how to use our wax pucks. As well as, some hot tips!

WHAT THE PUCK?
TO USE :
Simply remove from the packaging or container, break off the desired amount of wax, and place it on the top of your melter. The wax will melt slowly in the dish as it heats up and releases the fragrance. When the tea light has been extinguished or the melter has been turned off, the wax will re-harden ready for use next time. Unlike candles, the wax in melts will not evaporate.
You can re-use the wax several times until the fragrance has completely dispersed.
HOT TIPS :
-
Ensure the tea light has extinguished or you have turned the melter off. Allow the wax to cool slightly and simply pop a cotton wool ball or some tissue in the bowl. This will soak up the melted wax.
-
Please dispose of the wax carefully. DO NOT pour down the plughole (!) the wax will harden and cause a blockage (!)
-
Give the bowl a wipe with a clean piece of kitchen roll to remove any leftover residue, and the melter is ready to use again.
-
Please do not place your burner in the freezer. This can cause the wax melter or glass top to fracture and could cause the burner to become unsafe.
SAFETY FIRST, KIDS.

As with all things that involve fire, there's a wee bit of safety information.
Whether you're a newbie or a full-on wax fiend, it's best to know & get a bit of a safety refresh. See below for further guidance.
BUT HEY,
If all of these steps have been followed, and your wax is still being a rascal, please contact us via our Contact Us page or DM us on Instagram/Facebook and we'll be happy to investigate and resolve the issue.
